Consumer Confidence Falls Near 12 and a Half Year Low

U.S. consumer confidence fell sharply in September, dropping to its lowest level since April 2014 as Americans expressed growing concerns about the economy, employment opportunities and the rising cost of living.

According to the Conference Board, its Consumer Confidence Index declined 6.7 points to 81.9, falling below economists’ expectations. Concerns surrounding the labor market also increased, with fewer consumers reporting that jobs were plentiful and more saying employment was difficult to find.

Higher everyday expenses remain another major concern for households. Consumers continue to cite elevated prices, particularly for necessities such as energy and gasoline, while higher interest rates and borrowing costs are adding additional pressure.

The combination of weakening consumer confidence, persistent inflation concerns, higher borrowing costs and uncertainty surrounding the labor market highlights the challenges currently facing American households.

As economic uncertainty continues, the latest data serves as another reminder of the importance of understanding changing economic conditions and maintaining a diversified approach to long-term financial planning.
