Ukraine Launches Largest-Ever Drone Attack on Moscow

Ukraine launched more than 1,000 drones at Russia in a massive overnight assault, including hundreds aimed toward Moscow. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described it as the largest drone attack ever directed at the Russian capital. Russian officials said two people were killed and 20 wounded in the wider Moscow region.
The strikes targeted economically important infrastructure, including the Moscow Oil Refinery and Russian logistics facilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine also deployed domestically produced missiles, describing the campaign as an effort to put financial pressure on the resources supporting Russia's war. Russia's Defense Ministry said it intercepted approximately 1,100 Ukrainian drones across Russia, Crimea and the Black Sea.
The attack represents another escalation in the increasingly intense exchange of long-range strikes between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine has increasingly targeted oil refineries, energy infrastructure, logistics networks and other facilities tied to Russia's economy and military operations, while Russia continues large-scale missile and drone attacks against Ukraine.
Why it matters: The growing ability of both countries to strike infrastructure far beyond the front lines adds another layer of geopolitical uncertainty to an already prolonged conflict. Disruptions involving Russian energy infrastructure can also raise concerns about fuel supplies, energy markets and broader global economic stability. For markets, escalating geopolitical conflicts are another source of uncertainty that investors may consider when evaluating diversification and exposure to traditional safe-haven assets such as precious metals.
